With regular ground beef tacos you often will add tomatoes, cheese, and lettuce (this is the Americanized version of a taco).
For the pulled pork taco, called Carnitas in Spanish, the best ingredients are cilantro, onions, and thinly sliced avocado. The cilantro can really bring out the full pork flavor. If the pork is already seasoned, as it should be, you will not need to add much of anything else. Red onions are also a good choice.
A corn tortilla is used in the creation of the pork taco.
The cheese you use for authentic tacos is called Queso Fresco. This is a crumbling cheese, sold in a solid round shape. It looks like bleu cheese when crumbled. Without this, your pork taco will seem bland.
A popular addition to the Carnitas is sour cream, although this is a acquired taste.
Carnitas means ‘little meats‘ in Spanish, and applies to just the pork meat.
Salsa: May not be for everybody’s taste, but a salsa provides a balance of flavor and heat, if you have a spicy salsa, or you could just add chopped tomatoes, onions, and cilantro as your ‘salsa’.
Guacamole or Avocado slices: Add some nice texture to your taco.
Queso Fresco: Also called crumbling cheese. A must have for a tasty taco, or use it as a topping for fresh baked enchiladas. So good, really.
Oaxaca Cheese: This cheese can be hard to find in some USA grocery stores, but this cheese is stretchy and is something like mozzarella. Commonly used for quesadillas, but can be used for tacos.
Cotija Cheese: Another good cheese, but is hard to find on some grocery stores.
Other Taco Toppings: Shredded lettuce (American tacos), diced onions mixed with fresh cilantro add an essential taco flavor and texture. As with many Mexican dishes you could add a squeeze of lime juice, fresh or bottled, to bring out all the flavors of your loaded taco.
